La légende raconte qu'au temps des Sarrasins, ce site grandiose était un vaste domaine appartenant à un riche et puissant seigneur. Un jour qu'il chassait sur ses terres, il rencontra une jeune femme dont il tomba éperdument amoureux. Ne pouvant l'épouser à cause de son rang, et fou de chagrin, il invoqua la mort qui entendit son appel et le pétrifia sous l'apparence d'un lion figé pour l'éternité.
