Au commencement est l'Afrique : c'est au Kenya, puis en Côte d'Ivoire que Florence Combescure, à l'âge de quatorze ans, prend conscience de son intérêt pour l'art.
Bien avant d'admirer Zadkine, Picasso ou Matisse et de suivre le courant cubiste, c'est donc avec les Massaï qu'elle apprend à aimer et travailler la terre. L'artiste, originaire de Sainte Lucie de Tallano, Corse du sud, ou la terre et traditions sont très présentes ,expose aujourd'hui un travail-hommage.
Son oeuvre, des sculptures inspirées des arts primitifs mais tellement imprégnées du mouvement cubiste. Rien d'étonnant à dire vrai, tant le mouvement qui anima la première décennie du XXè siècle fut influencé par les arts primitifs africains (Georges Braque soi-même l'admettra).
On sait aussi que le japonisme (perspectives parallèles, aplats colorés) influença considérablement les cubistes. Or, curieusement, son œuvre, Florence Combescure la signe Mariko, « parce qu'un ami japonais, alors qu'elle fréquentait les Beaux-Arts à Montpellier, lui expliqua qu'au pays du Soleil levant Florence se disait Mariko ».
Elle le fait avec toute sa grâce et sa culture. Tout ce que la femme d'aujourd'hui a oublié. » La matière est toujours le grès. « Il y a, après un enduit, un ponçage, des couches de laque avec entre chaque couche du ponçage... C'est un travail très long. »
Mariko les expose à la galerie « Gauchet fine art » de Miami. Cette galerie a remarqué mon travail, présenté dans le cadre de l'expo ARTMIAMI de l'année dernière à laquelle j'avais participé à l'invitation du magazine Balthazar, et m'a ainsi sollicitée. J'ai signé un contrat pour deux ans. »
